Burst pipes cost insurers millions – but they can easily be prevented

January 23, 2026

Between early 2023 and September 2025, Allianz UK paid 345 claims worth a total of £ 20 million for damage caused by burst pipes, as revealed in a recent article by the Insurance Post.

When temperatures drop during the winter, water inside the pipes can freeze and expand, causing the pipes to burst.

This can cause significant damage to walls, floors, electrics, and personal belongings, and lead to large insurance payouts, especially if homeowners are away while the damage occurs.

One of these claims cost Allianz UK £ 566,000. The homeowners were abroad when the pipe burst.

Preventing pipe bursts effectively

Standard recommendations, such as leaving the heating on while away and having someone check on the home regularly, seem to fall short in many of these cases.

But there is a more reliable way to prevent pipe freezing.

By installing temperature sensors in the home and around the pipes and connecting the heating to a smart system, the temperature can easily be kept at safe levels using only the minimum energy required to prevent damage.

No matter if the homeowners are at home or away.
