Water damage on the rise in Norway – costing society NOK 4–5 Billion annually

Leaks in homes and cabins have become a major societal issue.

While Norwegians are known for taking fire safety seriously, the evolution around water damage is moving in the wrong direction. Every year, water-related damage causes losses of between NOK 4 and 5 Billion.

Today, three leading players announce the launch of Viking Guard – a damage prevention service that aims to tackle the growing issue of poor water protection in Norwegian homes and cabins.

The service is a joint initiative between insurance provider If, emergency response company Viking, and technology firm Onics Norway (formerly Datek Smart Home).

Smart sensors prevent damage before it happens

Viking Guard has developed a solution using smart sensors to detect leaks, moisture, smoke, or drops in temperature – sending early alerts to homeowners before small issues turn into major damage.

While the primary focus is water damage prevention, the service also includes smart smoke detection from day one.

"When making your home smarter with leak sensors, it's natural to also include connected smoke detectors. That’s why we offer both in our starter package," says Smaradottir.

"With 24/7 monitoring via our service center and sensors that track temperature in every room, customers can also feel confident their vacation homes are protected against frost and water damage," she adds.

What makes Viking Guard unique is the full-service customer experience – from sensor installation to 24/7 support, and seamless coordination of claims through If Insurance when needed.

Avoiding the ‘Cabin crisis’

Water damage often occurs slowly over time – and especially in cabins, where long gaps between visits make early detection critical.

"Anyone who has experienced a water leak knows how stressful and time-consuming the aftermath can be. The time, hassle, and disruption often affect people more than the financial loss," Sørbo explains. "While If is always there to support during a crisis, avoiding damage is by far the best outcome. Our hope is that fewer people will need to go through that experience going forward."
